Vacancy Details and Salary Scale

Currently, there is one unreserved vacancy for the post. While the appointment is temporary to begin with, there is every likelihood of the position becoming permanent in the long run. Under the WBS (ROPA) Rules 2019, the post carries a Pay Level 16 status. This translates to a generous salary scale ranging from Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,44,300.

Who Can Apply? (Qualifications & Experience)

Candidates are expected to hold a Master’s Degree in Library Science from a recognized university. Alternatively, those with a second-class Master’s degree in any other subject, complemented by a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, are also eligible. Experience is a key factor here; applicants must have at least two years of experience working in a public or institutional library of repute.

Language Skills and Computer Literacy

Communication is vital for this role. Candidates must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking Bengali or Nepali, along with English. For those whose mother tongue is Nepali, the Bengali language requirement is waived. Proficiency will be tested during the interview. Furthermore, knowledge of computer-based cataloguing and distribution systems is a highly desirable skill.

Age Limit and Relaxations

The upper age limit is set at 36 years as of January 1, 2026. However, the Commission may relax this limit for candidates with exceptional qualifications or extensive experience. Departmental candidates with substantive government service are also eligible for certain concessions.

Standard relaxations apply for reserved categories within West Bengal: 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates. For Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), the upper age limit is 45 years. In no case will the total age relaxation exceed 5 years.

Fees and Important Dates to Remember

The application fee is Rs. 210, plus online service charges. SC, ST, and PwBD candidates (with 40% or more disability) from West Bengal are exempted from this fee. It should be noted that reserved category candidates from other states do not qualify for this exemption. Once paid, the fee is non-refundable.

Mark your calendars for these dates:

  • March 24, 2026: Online applications begin.
  • April 14, 2026 (until 3 PM): Deadline for submission.
  • April 16 to April 20, 2026: Edit window for correcting application errors. Warning: Submitting multiple applications will lead to immediate disqualification.

The Selection Process

The primary mode of selection is an interview. However, if the volume of applications is high, the Commission reserves the right to conduct a Screening Test to shortlist candidates. For General category applicants, the qualifying mark in the interview is 40%. It is important to note that marks from the screening test will not be factored into the final merit list.

In the event of a tie in interview scores, seniority in age will be the deciding factor. If the age is also the same, the percentage obtained in the qualifying degree will be considered. Candidates requiring technical help or a scribe (for PwBD) should refer to the official guidelines on the Commission’s website.
