When white light passes through a prism it splits into seven colours. What is this called?
White light is a mixture of seven colours. In a prism each colour bends by a different angle, so the colours separate; this is dispersion. Refraction is only the bending of light when it changes medium, while the separation into colours is dispersion.
- Order of colours: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red (VIBGYOR)
- Violet bends the most, red the least
- Refraction = bending of the path; dispersion = separation into colours
- VIBGYOR
Which colour has the longest wavelength in the visible spectrum?
Red has the longest wavelength in visible light (about 700 nm) and violet the shortest (about 400 nm). Because its wavelength is long, red light is scattered the least by air. That is why red is used for danger signals: it can be seen from far away.
- Red: longest wavelength, least scattering
- Violet: shortest wavelength, most scattering
- Red = Really long wave
Why does the sky look blue?
Sunlight is scattered by gas molecules and dust in the atmosphere. Blue light, with its short wavelength, is scattered the most, so blue light reaches our eyes from every direction. The sea looks blue partly because it reflects the sky and partly because water absorbs red light, not the other way round.
- Scattering is greater for shorter wavelengths
- With no atmosphere (as on the Moon) the sky looks black
- At sunrise and sunset light travels a longer path, the blue is scattered away and the sky looks reddish
Which kind of mirror does a dentist use to see enlarged teeth inside the mouth?
A concave mirror gives an erect, enlarged image when the object is close, so dentists use it. A convex mirror always gives a smaller image but a wide field of view, which is why a vehicle rear-view mirror is convex. A lens refracts light instead of reflecting it, so it is not a mirror.
- Concave mirror: shaving mirror, vehicle headlights, torch reflector
- Convex mirror: rear-view mirror, safety mirror at road bends
| Mirror | Use |
|---|---|
| Concave | Dentist's mirror, shaving mirror, headlights, torch |
| Convex | Rear-view mirror, mirror at road bends |
| Plane | Ordinary mirror, periscope |
The heat of the Sun reaches the Earth without any medium. What is this mode of heat transfer called?
Most of the space between the Sun and the Earth is empty, so neither conduction nor convection is possible. Heat arrives directly as electromagnetic waves, which is radiation. Conduction happens in solids and convection in liquids and gases.
- Conduction: solids, particles do not move from place to place
- Convection: liquids and gases, particles carry the heat
- Radiation: needs no medium
| Mode | Where | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Conduction | Solids | A metal spoon heating in hot tea |
| Convection | Liquids and gases | Water boiling in a pan |
| Radiation | Even in vacuum | Heat from the Sun |
Why does food cook faster in a pressure cooker?
The trapped steam raises the pressure inside the cooker, so the boiling point of water goes above 100°C. Food cooks faster in hotter water. In the hills the air pressure is low, so water boils at a lower temperature and cooking is slower.
- Higher pressure raises the boiling point, lower pressure reduces it
- In the hills water in an open pan boils below 100°C
- More pressure = higher boiling point
Night blindness is caused by the deficiency of which vitamin?
Vitamin A is needed to make the light-sensitive pigment in the retina. Without it a person cannot see in dim light, which is night blindness. Vitamin A is found in carrot, papaya, yellow and green vegetables, liver and eggs.
- Carrot, papaya, spinach, eggs and liver are sources of vitamin A
- Vitamin A is fat-soluble
Rickets in children is caused by the deficiency of which vitamin?
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Without it a child's bones become soft and bend, which is rickets. Sunlight makes vitamin D in the skin, so it is also called the sunshine vitamin.
- In adults the deficiency causes osteomalacia
- Sunlight, milk and egg yolk give vitamin D
| Vitamin | Deficiency disease |
|---|---|
| A | Night blindness |
| B1 | Beriberi |
| C | Scurvy |
| D | Rickets |
| K | Delayed blood clotting |
Which metal is present in chlorophyll, the green pigment of leaves?
Magnesium sits at the centre of the chlorophyll molecule. Iron is found in haemoglobin in human blood, not in chlorophyll. With chlorophyll a plant absorbs sunlight and makes food by photosynthesis.
- Chlorophyll = magnesium
- Haemoglobin = iron
- Chlorophyll has magnesium, haemoglobin has iron: easy to mix up
- Magnesium in the leaf, iron in the blood
Which of the following diseases is caused by a virus?
Dengue is a viral disease spread by the Aedes mosquito. Malaria is caused by a protozoan, Plasmodium, carried by the Anopheles mosquito. Typhoid and cholera are bacterial diseases.
- Viral: dengue, chickenpox, measles, polio
- Bacterial: cholera, typhoid, tuberculosis
| Disease | Cause |
|---|---|
| Dengue | Virus |
| Malaria | Protozoan |
| Typhoid | Bacteria |
| Cholera | Bacteria |
| Ringworm | Fungus |
Why does ice float on water?
When water freezes its volume increases, so its density falls (about 0.92 g/cm³). Water has a density of about 1 g/cm³, so the less dense ice floats. That is why in cold countries only the top of a lake freezes and fish survive in the water below.
- Water expands by about 9% on freezing
- Water has its greatest density at 4°C
What is the SI unit of force?
The SI unit of force is the newton (N): the force needed to give a mass of 1 kg an acceleration of 1 m/s². The joule is the unit of work and energy, the watt of power and the pascal of pressure.
- Force = mass × acceleration
- 1 joule = 1 newton × 1 metre
- The unit of force is named after Newton
| Quantity | SI unit | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Force | Newton | N |
| Work and energy | Joule | J |
| Power | Watt | W |
| Pressure | Pascal | Pa |
The normal human body temperature is 98.6°F. What is it on the Celsius scale?
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 and multiply by $\frac{5}{9}$: $\frac{5}{9} \times (98.6 - 32) = \frac{5}{9} \times 66.6 = 37$. So normal body temperature is 37°C. The values 36°C and 38°C are close, but 38°C would count as fever.
- Water freezes at 0°C = 32°F and boils at 100°C = 212°F
- A clinical thermometer contains mercury
When a bus brakes suddenly, the passengers lean forward. Which law does this illustrate?
The passengers move along with the bus. When the bus stops suddenly their bodies try to keep moving, so they lean forward. This property of matter is inertia, and it comes from the first law of motion.
- First law: the law of inertia
- Second law: force = mass × acceleration
- Third law: every action has an equal and opposite reaction
- First = inertia
Scissors are which kind of simple machine?
The two blades of scissors turn about a fixed point, called the fulcrum, so scissors are a lever. In fact scissors are two levers joined together. A sloping ramp is an inclined plane, while the screw and pulley are different simple machines.
- A lever has a fulcrum, an effort and a load
- Tongs, pliers and a balance are also levers
Which instrument measures atmospheric pressure?
Air pressure is measured with a barometer. A thermometer measures temperature, a hygrometer the humidity of the air and an ammeter electric current. A sudden fall in the barometer reading warns of a storm.
- Normal air pressure at sea level is about 76 cm of mercury
- Air pressure falls with height
| Instrument | Measures |
|---|---|
| Thermometer | Temperature |
| Barometer | Air pressure |
| Hygrometer | Humidity |
| Ammeter | Electric current |
| Voltmeter | Potential difference |
Which is the hardest naturally occurring substance?
Diamond is a form of carbon in which every atom is firmly bonded to four others, so it is the hardest natural substance. Graphite is also carbon, but its layers slide over each other easily, so it is soft.
- Diamond and graphite are forms of carbon
- Graphite conducts electricity, diamond does not
- Pencil lead is graphite
- Diamond and graphite are both carbon, yet one is the hardest and the other is soft
Which gas is dissolved in soda water?
Soda water is made by dissolving carbon dioxide in water under pressure. When the bottle is opened the pressure drops and the gas escapes as bubbles. The gas gives a slightly sour taste because it forms carbonic acid in water.
- The solubility of a gas falls when pressure falls
- Carbon dioxide is also used to put out fires
Which part of the plant is a potato?
A potato is a modified stem called a tuber. New shoots grow from its eyes, which is a feature of stems. Carrot, radish and sweet potato, however, are modified roots.
- Potato, ginger and turmeric are modified stems
- Carrot, radish, turnip and sweet potato are modified roots
- Potato is a stem but sweet potato is a root
Which blood group is the universal donor?
The red cells of group O carry neither the A nor the B antigen, so they do not usually cause a reaction in people of other groups. That is why O is called the universal donor. Group AB has no antibodies, so it can receive blood of every group and is called the universal recipient.
- Group O: universal donor
- Group AB: universal recipient
- Blood groups were discovered by Karl Landsteiner
- Donor is O, recipient is AB: easy to reverse
