Deficiency of which vitamin causes night blindness?
Vitamin A is needed to make rhodopsin, the pigment of the retina. Without it, seeing in dim light becomes hard, which is night blindness. Lack of vitamin C causes scurvy, D causes rickets and K delays blood clotting.
- Carrots, papaya, egg yolk and fish liver oil contain vitamin A
- Vitamin A is fat-soluble
- Mixing up vitamin C and A: lack of C gives scurvy
- A for eyesight: A protects the eyes.
| Vitamin | Deficiency disease |
|---|---|
| A | Night blindness |
| B1 | Beriberi |
| C | Scurvy |
| D | Rickets |
| K | Delayed blood clotting |
What is the pH of pure water at 25°C?
Pure water is neutral, so its pH at 25°C is exactly 7. Below 7 a solution is acidic and above 7 it is basic. Lemon juice is acidic (pH about 2) while lime water is basic (pH near 12).
- pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14
- Litmus is a common acid-base indicator
- Rain water is slightly acidic (about 5.6); it is not pure water
- 7 is the middle: acid below, base above.
| Substance | Approx. pH |
|---|---|
| Stomach acid | 1.5–2 |
| Lemon juice | 2 |
| Pure water | 7 |
| Baking soda solution | 8–9 |
| Lime water | 12 |
Which gas is present in the largest amount in the atmosphere?
About 78% of dry air is nitrogen. Oxygen is about 21%, argon about 0.9% and carbon dioxide only about 0.04%. Many pick oxygen because we breathe it, but nitrogen is the largest part.
- Nitrogen is fairly inert and does not support burning
- Argon is the most abundant noble gas in air
- Assuming oxygen is the most because we breathe it
- 78–21–1: nitrogen, oxygen, everything else.
Composition of dry air
Which blood group is known as the universal donor?
O negative red cells carry no A, B or Rh antigen, so the recipient's antibodies do not attack them and the blood can be given to anyone. AB positive can receive from all, so it is the universal recipient.
- Karl Landsteiner discovered the ABO blood groups
- Group AB plasma has neither anti-A nor anti-B antibodies
- Swapping universal donor and universal recipient
- O means zero antigens, so it can be given to all.
| Group | Antigen on red cells | Antibody in plasma |
|---|---|---|
| A | A | anti-B |
| B | B | anti-A |
| AB | A and B | None |
| O | None | anti-A and anti-B |
Which pigment gives human blood its red colour?
Haemoglobin is the iron-containing protein of red blood cells; it carries oxygen and makes blood red. Chlorophyll is the green pigment of plants, melanin colours the skin and carotene gives carrots their orange.
- Haemoglobin contains iron
- Its deficiency causes anaemia
- Confusing chlorophyll with blood pigment (similar in structure, different in work)
- Haem = blood, globin = protein.
Which property must the material of an electric fuse wire have?
A fuse wire is connected in series. When too much current flows, it heats up and melts, breaking the circuit and saving the appliance. So it must have a low melting point; an alloy of lead and tin is commonly used.
- A fuse is connected in series
- It works on the heating effect of current
- Thinking of a high melting point: then it would not melt and give no protection
- The fuse sacrifices itself to save the appliance.
What is needed for iron to rust?
Rusting is an oxidation in which iron combines with oxygen and water or moisture to form hydrated iron oxide. Without either one, iron does not rust. That is why paint, oil or a zinc coating is used to keep iron away from air and water.
- Coating with zinc is called galvanisation
- Stainless steel does not rust easily
- In dry air, or in water with no oxygen, iron does not rust
- Two conditions for rust: air and water.
What is the chemical name of baking soda?
Baking soda is sodium hydrogencarbonate (NaHCO3). On heating or with an acid it releases carbon dioxide, which makes cakes and breads rise. Sodium carbonate is washing soda (Na2CO3) and sodium hydroxide is caustic soda.
- Baking soda is also used as an antacid
- Sodium hydroxide is a strong base, NaOH
- Confusing baking soda with washing soda (Na2CO3)
- Baking soda is the "bi"-carbonate, with hydrogen in it.
| Common name | Chemical name | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Baking soda | Sodium hydrogencarbonate | NaHCO3 |
| Washing soda | Sodium carbonate | Na2CO3 |
| Caustic soda | Sodium hydroxide | NaOH |
| Table salt | Sodium chloride | NaCl |
Plants lose water vapour through pores in their leaves. What is this process called?
Loss of water vapour through the tiny pores of leaves, the stomata, is called transpiration. It cools the plant and keeps water moving up from the roots. Respiration breaks food down for energy, photosynthesis makes food and osmosis is movement of water across a membrane.
- Guard cells open and close the stomata
- Transpiration is faster during the day
- Treating transpiration and respiration as the same
- Think "trans" (across) leaf pores: vapour goes out.
Which instrument measures atmospheric pressure?
A barometer measures air pressure. An anemometer measures wind speed, a hygrometer measures humidity and an ammeter measures electric current. A sudden fall in a mercury barometer suggests stormy weather.
- Torricelli invented the mercury barometer
- Pressure at sea level is about 760 mm of mercury
- Mixing up anemometer and barometer
- "Baro" means weight or pressure.
| Instrument | Measures |
|---|---|
| Barometer | Air pressure |
| Anemometer | Wind speed |
| Hygrometer | Humidity |
| Ammeter | Electric current |
| Thermometer | Temperature |
What is the SI unit of electrical resistance?
The SI unit of resistance is the ohm, symbol Ω. The volt is the unit of potential difference, the ampere of current and the watt of power. By Ohm's law $V = I \times R$, so resistance $R = \frac{V}{I}$.
- Ohm's law was given by Georg Simon Ohm
- For the same voltage, more resistance means less current
- Confusing volt (potential) with ohm (resistance)
- Volt divided by ampere gives ohm.
| Quantity | Unit | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Potential difference | Volt | V |
| Current | Ampere | A |
| Resistance | Ohm | Ω |
| Power | Watt | W |
Which is the hardest natural substance?
Diamond is a form of carbon in which every atom is strongly bonded to four others, making it the hardest natural substance. Graphite, another form of carbon, is soft and slippery and is used in pencil leads.
- Diamond does not conduct electricity but graphite does
- Both are allotropes of carbon
- Diamond and graphite are both carbon, only arranged differently
- Diamond hard, graphite soft.
What is "dry ice"?
Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. It does not melt into a liquid but turns straight into gas, a change called sublimation. It is at about −78°C, so it is used to keep food cold.
- Solid to gas directly is sublimation
- Camphor and naphthalene also sublime
- Ordinary ice (solid water) is not dry ice
- "Dry" because it leaves no liquid behind.
From which gland of the body is the hormone insulin secreted?
Insulin is secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas and lowers blood glucose. Its shortage causes diabetes mellitus. The thyroid secretes thyroxine and the adrenal gland secretes adrenaline.
- The pancreas is both an endocrine and an exocrine gland
- It also makes glucagon, which acts opposite to insulin
- The liver stores glucose but does not make insulin
- Insulin – pancreas – diabetes.
| Gland | Hormone |
|---|---|
| Pancreas | Insulin, glucagon |
| Thyroid | Thyroxine |
| Adrenal | Adrenaline |
| Pituitary | Growth hormone |
Which of the following diseases is caused by a virus?
Polio is caused by the poliovirus. Malaria is caused by the protozoan Plasmodium, while tuberculosis and cholera are caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium and Vibrio cholerae. Antibiotics work on bacterial diseases, not on viral ones.
- Measles, dengue and chickenpox are also viral
- Antibiotics do not act on viruses
- Thinking malaria is viral: it is caused by a protozoan
- Polio, measles, dengue: three viral diseases.
| Disease | Cause |
|---|---|
| Polio | Virus |
| Dengue | Virus |
| Tuberculosis | Bacteria |
| Cholera | Bacteria |
| Malaria | Protozoan |
Which harmful rays of the Sun does the ozone layer absorb?
The ozone layer in the stratosphere absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, which can cause skin cancer and eye disease. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) damage the ozone layer.
- The formula of ozone is O3
- The Montreal Protocol is the treaty to cut CFCs
- Ozone depletion is not the same as the greenhouse effect
- Ozone is the umbrella against UV.
Which metal is liquid at room temperature?
Mercury (Hg) is the only metal that is liquid at ordinary room temperature, with a melting point of about −39°C. Lithium, aluminium and copper are solid. Mercury is used in barometers and thermometers, but it is poisonous.
- The symbol of mercury is Hg (from Latin hydrargyrum)
- Among non-metals, bromine is liquid
- Bromine is also liquid but it is not a metal
- Liquid metal: mercury; liquid non-metal: bromine.
What is the main constituent of CNG (compressed natural gas)?
CNG is mainly methane (CH4), the chief component of natural gas. It pollutes less than petrol or diesel. The main constituents of LPG are propane and butane, while biogas is also mostly methane.
- Methane is a greenhouse gas
- Marsh gas is also mainly methane
- LPG and CNG are not the same: LPG is propane and butane
- CNG is CH4, methane.
Deficiency of iodine causes which disease?
The thyroid gland uses iodine to make thyroxine. Without iodine the gland swells, which is called goitre; that is why iodised salt is advised. Rickets comes from lack of vitamin D, scurvy from vitamin C and anaemia mainly from iron.
- Sea fish and iodised salt supply iodine
- Thyroxine controls the rate of metabolism
- Anaemia is due to iron, not iodine
- Iodine – thyroid – goitre.
How many bones are there in an adult human body?
An adult human body has 206 bones. A newborn has roughly 270–300, but some fuse as the child grows. The longest bone is the femur of the thigh and the smallest is the stapes of the ear.
- The longest bone is the femur
- The smallest bone is the stapes in the ear
- A child has more bones than an adult
- Remember 206.
| Bone | Distinction |
|---|---|
| Femur | Longest |
| Stapes | Smallest |
| Skull | About 22 bones |
| Vertebral column | 33 vertebrae (in a child) |
