India’s Soils and Natural Vegetation Quiz: Clerkship 2024
A little practice. A step forward.
10 questions on soil types, crops and forest types. 📖 Read the detailed topic
Which soil covers the largest area of India?
Rivers have spread alluvium across the northern plains and coastal plains, so it covers the biggest area. Black and red soils are mostly in the Deccan, and laterite covers a smaller area.
- Alluvial is India's most extensive and fertile soil
- Rich in potash and lime, poor in nitrogen and humus
- Suits rice, wheat, sugarcane and jute
- Alluvium = spread by rivers = widest cover
| Soil | Colour/feature | Main crops |
|---|---|---|
| Alluvial | Fertile, rich in potash and lime | Rice, wheat, jute, sugarcane |
| Black (Regur) | Black, holds moisture | Cotton, soybean, sugarcane |
| Red | Red from iron oxide | Pulses, millets, tobacco |
| Laterite | Leached, acidic | Tea, coffee, cashew |
Which soil is best suited to cotton?
Black soil holds moisture for long and contains lime, iron and magnesium, which cotton likes, so it is also called 'black cotton soil'. Desert soil cannot hold water.
- Formed from Deccan lava
- Common in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh
- Sticky when wet, cracks when dry
- Black soil = black cotton
What is another name for black soil?
Black soil is called Regur. Khadar and Bhangar are two kinds of alluvial soil, not names of black soil.
- Regur = black soil
- Deep cracks in the dry season give it a 'self-ploughing' nature
- Khadar and Bhangar are alluvial types, not black soil
- Regur = the Deccan's black soil
Why is red soil red in colour?
Red soil forms from weathered granite and gneiss and contains iron oxide, which gives the colour. It is actually poor in humus and lime.
- Poor in nitrogen, phosphorus, humus and lime
- Good for pulses, millets and tobacco
- Found in Purulia and Bankura of West Bengal
- Red = iron
Which soil forms through leaching under heavy rainfall?
Heavy rain with alternating wet and dry spells washes out lime and silica, leaving iron and aluminium. This leaching creates laterite. Alluvium and black soil do not form that way, and deserts get little rain.
- Common in Kerala, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Assam
- Suits tea, coffee and cashew
- Used to make bricks
- Leaching makes laterite, not alluvium
- Laterite is brick-like (Latin 'later' = brick)
What is old alluvium called?
Old alluvium on higher banks is Bhangar and has kankar (lime nodules). New alluvium deposited by each flood is Khadar and is more fertile.
- Bhangar = old, less fertile, with kankar
- Khadar = new, more fertile
- Easy to swap Bhangar and Khadar: old = Bhangar
- Bhangar = old, Khadar = new
Which type of natural vegetation is found in the Sundarbans?
The Sundarbans is a mangrove forest standing in tidal saline water, with sundari as the main tree. Deciduous forests grow on drier non-saline land, thorn scrub in low rainfall, coniferous forests in the Himalaya.
- The Sundarbans is the world's largest mangrove forest
- Pneumatophores (breathing roots) rise out of the mud
- Home of the Royal Bengal Tiger
- Sundarbans = sundari = mangrove
| Forest | Rainfall | Trees |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical evergreen | Over 200 cm | Mahogany, rosewood |
| Tropical deciduous | 70–200 cm | Sal, teak |
| Thorn scrub | Under 70 cm | Babool, cactus |
| Mangrove | Tidal water | Sundari |
Sal and teak belong to which type of forest?
Sal and teak grow in monsoon regions with 70–200 cm rain and shed leaves in the dry season to save water. Evergreen forests get over 200 cm.
- India's most widespread forest type
- Sal forests in Jhargram and Bankura of West Bengal
- Source of valuable timber
- Sal-teak shed leaves in the dry season
| Forest | Rainfall | Trees |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical evergreen | Over 200 cm | Mahogany, rosewood |
| Tropical deciduous | 70–200 cm | Sal, teak |
| Thorn scrub | Under 70 cm | Babool, cactus |
| Mangrove | Tidal water | Sundari |
Babool and cactus grow mainly in which region?
Thorn scrub grows where rainfall is below 70 cm: long roots, small or spiny leaves to reduce water loss. The Duars, Sundarbans and Kerala coast have plenty of rain or water.
- Rajasthan, Gujarat, western Madhya Pradesh
- Spiny leaves reduce evaporation
- Babool, date palm, cactus
- Less rain = thorns
| Forest | Rainfall | Trees |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical evergreen | Over 200 cm | Mahogany, rosewood |
| Tropical deciduous | 70–200 cm | Sal, teak |
| Thorn scrub | Under 70 cm | Babool, cactus |
| Mangrove | Tidal water | Sundari |
Deodar and pine belong to which type of forest?
In the cold higher Himalaya conifers grow: deodar, pine and fir. Their needle-like leaves let snow slide off. The other three types belong to warm or saline regions.
- Vegetation changes as altitude rises
- Alpine meadows lie higher still
- Deodar-pine = mountains, needle leaves
